As a Singaporean-born musician, Rebecca Tan, started playing the Guzheng at a tender age of 5. At the age of 7, Rebecca was under the tutelage of Thum Soon Boon. Shortly after receiving tutelage from Mr Thum, Rebecca auditioned for the School of Young Talent program at Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and upon the first entrance exam, she was successful. Under the School of Young Talent, Rebecca then received tutelage from world renowned Guzheng Musician and Educator Mdm Yin Qun. After receiving tutelage from Yin Qun, Rebecca then started realizing her potential as a musician and took her Grade 9 exams from the Central Conservatory of Music for guzheng and passed with Merit at the age of 12.
Rebecca in 2012, competed in the first “China-Japan-Korea international Zheng contest” and she was awarded first prize in the Non-professional Overseas Category. Other than playing the guzheng, Rebecca is also a pianist and at the same time learned how to play the euphonium and is also very active in the Band scene alongside the Guzheng Scene. In 2018, Rebecca enrolled into Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), School of Music, and under took Composition as her major. Currently, Rebecca is under tutelage of Head of Composition in NAFA Dr. Goh Toh Chai Zechariah. She is currently a full time student in NAFA.
